Self Led Groups
The Museum is a great place for a group visit and we can offer a range of different options and facilities to suit the needs of your group.
If you are planning to bring a group of 10 or more for a self-led visit, please book in advance using the NEW online booking system below. This includes Language or Summer Schools, Community Groups (e.g. U3A, Brownies), and Higher Education. You will then be emailed a form which must be completed to confirm your visit.
Pre-booking your visit helps us to control numbers within our spaces to ensure a positive museum experience for all. We recommend booking at least two-weeks in advance. Please do not arrive at the Museum without a booking confirmation as you will not be admitted.
Visits on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during Cambridgeshire school term-time are available from 2pm only.
Group Size
The maximum group size is 30 people per timeslot. If your group is larger, please make two separate bookings, or let us know so that a suggested timetable can be made for your visit. Please make sure that students under the age of 18 are always accompanied by an adult. We require a minimum ratio of 1 adult to 10 students when visiting the galleries.
Charges
Tour operators, language schools, summer schools and other commercial groups
We welcome organised group visits and require all groups to book in advance. We ask that groups book at least 2 days in advance to secure a booking. There is a £3.00 administration fee per person for all group visits, including travel agencies, tour operators, summer schools, and EFL groups.
For community and non-commercial self-led group bookings, please contact us as you may be exempt from the fee: umzc@zoo.cam.ac.uk
How to book:
- Book your slot through our website using the bookings calendar. This will direct you to the booking form, where you pay.
- Fill in your group details on the booking form and confirm your booking by paying. The price is £3 per person.
- You will receive confirmation of your booking after payment.
- On the day of your booking, please proceed to the reception desk at the entry time specified in your booking confirmation.
- You will need to show your booking confirmation, either a printed copy or on a mobile device.
- If you are bringing children under the age of 18, there must be at least one adult for every 10 students present. If you do not have adequate adult supervision, museum staff may turn away your group.
Resources
The Museum does not have the resources to offer taught sessions for EFL students. Group leaders are welcome to provide self-led tours for small groups and to make use of the learning resources available here.
Museum Tours
For adult groups, we offer a 1-hour Museum Overview Tour of the galleries with a subject specialist. To request a tour, please email the Museum directly at umzc@zoo.cam.ac.uk. Tours are subject to staff availability. Please note that there is a charge for this service.
Audio description and touch tours
The Museum of Zoology education team lead audio descriptive and touch tours as part of the University of Cambridge Museums ‘Making Sense’ tours programme. This service is also available to blind and partially sighted groups, if requested when booking.
