Grizzled skipper

Pictured: grizzled skipper, Pyrgus malvae

Notes from Jenyns: Frequent in Bottisham fen in May, & elsewhere.

200-year trend in Cambridgeshire: Decline.

Modern records

The grizzled skipper was once quite widespread in Cambridgeshire but it is now rare in the county, occurring at just a handful of sites. Although there has been some recent expansion into new areas, particularly in the north of the county in brownfield sites and brickpits with abundant hot bare ground, it would certainly not be described as ‘frequent’ as in Jenyns’ notebook.
