Pictured: glanville fritillary, Melitaea cinxia
Notes from Jenyns: Two specimens taken at Stapleford, June 15 by Mr Lee.
200-year trend in Cambridgeshire: Decline to local extinction.
Modern records
Today in the UK this species is nearly entirely restricted to the Isle of Wight and is not found in Cambridgeshire. Historical records such as the one recorded here in Jenyns’ notes show that it used to be more widespread across the south east of England but it was likely always a rarity.
