Pictured: large heath, Coenonympha tullia
Notes from Jenyns: This species is not mentioned in Jenyns’ notebooks.
200-year trend in Cambridgeshire: No change.
Modern records
This species is confined to wet, boggy habitats in the north of the UK. Therefore, Jenyns never recorded the large heath in Cambridgeshire and it remains absent to this day. If you move up through northern England into Scotland, the markings of the large heath change and roughly fall into three groups. This has led to three different subspecies being named, with intermediate forms existing in between.
