Unlike most insects, which have four wings, the hindwings of flies have been reduced to small bulbous projections called halteres. These help to balance and stabilise flight, enabling flies to perform impressive feats of aerial acrobatics. The Latin name for this order of insects ‘Diptera’ literally translates as two wings, with ‘di’ meaning two and ‘ptera’ meaning wings.
