gatekeeper butterfly

Pictured: gatekeeper, Pyronia tithonus

Notes from Jenyns: Common in hedges & grassy lanes, particularly about Ely.

200-year trend in Cambridgeshire: Little change.

Modern records

This species is still common and widespread throughout the county and, as Jenyns notes, is often seen in grassy lanes near hedgerows. As the name suggests, these types of habitat often have a gate nearby, making the butterfly a common visitor of these structures.
