silver-studded blue

Pictured: silver-studded blue, Plebejus argus

Notes from Jenyns: Occurs on the Devils Ditch, but not plentifully. Taken in Whitewood near Gamlingay by J.C. Dale, Esq. ~ Cambridge.

200-year trend in Cambridgeshire: Decline to local extinction.

Modern records

There are only a few historical records of this butterfly in the county and, as Jenyns mentions, it was never found ‘plentifully’. The silver-studded blue is usually found on bogs or heathland and many waterlogged sites were drained in Cambridgeshire during the 1850s. This is thought to have resulted in its extinction in the county.
