Talking Zoology in the Zoology Department Lecture Theatre

Cuckoo – cheating by nature

14.00-14.45

Nick is Professor of Behavioural Ecology in the Department of Zoology. He and his colleagues have been studying cuckoos in the fens for the past thirty years. In this talk, illustrated with film clips and some remarkable photographs, he shows how field experiments have revealed the tricks that cuckoos employ to deceive their hosts, including the secretive laying of eggs that mimic the host's eggs and manipulative begging by cuckoo chicks. He also discusses the reasons for the recent decline in cuckoos - the loss not only of our herald of Spring but also of some of the most extraordinary natural history on our planet.

Suitable for all ages.

Doors open at 13.50. Arrive early for a good seat.
